Nicky Tsai is a visual artist whose main medium of expression is photography.
She holds a BFA in Photography from Zhejiang University of Science and Technology in 2020 and MA in photography from Musashino Art University in 2024.
With her work, she explores time, memory, and the relationship between humans and nature, while examining experiences that cannot be directly seen, confirmed, or articulated. Her practice also engages with belief, psychological states, the boundaries between life and death, and between reality and the unknown.
In recent years, distance from home has led her to reconsider family relationships from a more objective perspective, bringing questions of memory, loss, and the unspoken connections between people further into her practice. This has also prompted her to reconsider the role of photography in everyday life, and whether photography can offer a way to understand, confront, and heal from personal experiences.
Her work sits between archives and images, with a concern for the literariness of photography and the expressive possibilities of the image itself.
